When it comes to video games, one of the most enjoyable forms of immersive entertainment is any level centered around Christmas and festive environments. While some present the holiday in its most glamorous of settings, others look just plain bizarre. Let’s explore some of the weirdest out there.
Any level that lets you play Santa Claus
This one is sort of cheating, but it’s just too hilarious and sad to leave out.
In the flash rag-doll physics game Happy Wheels, you play as an array of characters through numerous levels. One of the characters is old Saint Nick. The levels vary in quality, seeing as they’re made by players themselves.
There’s no doubt about it: it’s just plain weird seeing Santa driving his sleigh when pulled by troubled elves who subsequently tumble around in agony.
Die Hard Trilogy
Die Hard and Die Hard 2
Some people believe that Die Hard is a festive movie. Some don’t. But that’s okay.
Die Hard Trilogy is comprised of three games, with each based on one of the first three movies. Each also has its own style of gameplay. While the third movie is not festive at all, the first two are set at Christmas time, with the games following suit.
In the third-person shooter game, you rescue hostages and shoot terrorists. In the on-rails shooter game based on the first sequel, you shoot yet more terrorists. The difference with Die Harder is that you can use your light gun, should you so choose to.
A departure from the bizarre
Before we move on to the strangest Christmas-themed level of them all, let’s explore some of the more enjoyable Christmas games out there.
Perhaps the greatest of all the Super Mario games, Super Mario Odyssey’s Snow Kingdom, is full of diverse locations to wander around, including hot deserts and sunny beaches. The Snow Kingdom is one of those worlds, with echoes of the festive season all around. So okay, it may be not entirely a Christmasy game, but you do see enemies wearing Santa hats and, if you listen closely enough, you can even hear the sound of sleigh bells. Some of the most festive fun to be had when it comes to games is on the slots. BitCasino features one called A Christmas Carol, based on the Charles Dickens novel. The best thing about it is that it’s just plain fun. The second best that users can play for free; which let’s face it, is never a bad thing.
Now without further ado, here’s one pretty strange Christmas-themed level.
Kingdom Hearts 2
As it’s taken from the excellent movie The Nightmare Before Christmas, the world in Kingdom Hearts 2 is bizarre, to say the least.
As Sora, you interact with your favourite characters, plus Lock, Shock, and Barrel. During your brief stay, you’ll be accompanied by the visual splendour of Christmas all around you: candy canes, colourful lights, snow, etc.
However, with Kingdom Hearts being a crossover between Final Fantasy and Disney, you’ll be up against a variety of Nobodies and Heartless, and a Dr. Finkelstein-created monster.
Perhaps the most bizarre aspect of the game is that something actually happens to Sora that’s even remotely interesting: he begins to doubt the existence of Santa Claus. While that may not sound too deep or particularly special, it’s a rare occurrence throughout the entire series that we’ve known Sora to feel any kind of internal conflict.
Enjoy these Christmas-themed games this holiday season and beyond. Got anything even stranger on your mind that we forgot to mention? Let us know.
