Hot New Year: Three Game Sequels to Watch in 2018

Gaming is bigger and better than ever before – we have virtual reality, phones in our pockets that double as consoles and an industry continuing to thrive with the development of new hardware. Those on PC, PS4 and Xbox One alike are treated to triple AAA titles releases every other week, and innovations such as the Nintendo Switch prove that there’s still room for more in an already crowded market. Whether you’re a casual gamer, a dedicated fan or a pro, there’s little doubt that the new year has a whole lot more in store just waiting for its date. This is a sequel rundown – an A to Z of all you can expect in 2018, from Red Dead 2 to the next flash instalment of the legendary Metal Gear.

1 Red Dead Redemption 2

Howdy, cowboy. Remember that Rockstar RPG of old? The Game of the Year winning, fifteen million copies selling giant that was Red Dead Redemption? The original saw players gun slinging their war through the wild west, an open world RPG unique in its setting and take on the environment. With a strong storyline and solid backbone of characters, it charmed and beguiled at every stage of its campaign. There were even thematic pastimes: drinking and gambling, reflective still of some of today’s entertainment. There are websites, apps and casinos galore both in Red Dead and now just waiting for players to take to the cards, and brand new website after brand new website continues to grow the industry. Roll the dice. Spin the slot. Let your hair down, in the wild west or from the comfort of your living room sofa.

As for the sequel – well, you can expect monumentously improved graphics, engine systems and physics compared to the already stellar original. Its another tale of America’s heartland – of the lone rider, of atmosphere and mounting tension. If you liked the first, you’ll be pretty sure to like the second – Rockstar rarely loses its touch when it comes to successor games. Just look at Grand Theft Auto.

2 Metal Gear Survive

A survival action-adventure. Metal Gear goes beyond genre, its series spanning multiple categories and types. After the outrageous success of The Phantom Pain, there's a lot to be expected from this next Konami publication. The story takes place between Pain and Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zero. Released on all major platforms, we'll follow Big Boss as he evacuates his besieged Mother Base only to be sucked into a wormhole and out into an alternate reality. Pretty crazy, right?

3 Crackdown 3

Number three, Crackdown three. An iconic series that has been without its third installment for far too long, Crackdown follows the players in control of a kind of superhuman soldier - enhanced by tech and know how, you sprint, jump, punch and smash your way through an open world in a crime fighting endeavour like no other. With stylised graphics, 4k capability and the addition of true boss fights, this is definitely one to watch. The first two Crackdowns were unique in their take and play in the open world. We can only hope the current developers have stayed true to such past ethos.

So what are you waiting for? Get online: preorder, research, turn on your console. There are games out there just waiting to be played, and old favourites that each deserve a return from time to time. Relax. Enjoy. The gaming world is your oyster.
