GOTY 2017

Joel's Top 5 Games of 2017

Although 2017 will probably not be looked at fondly by most for its political and social turmoil. It sure was an amazing year for video games to come in and provide an incredible escape from it all. All three major platforms had an amazing year and one that I think when we look back on in a decade will go down as one of the best years in video games ever.

Hiram's Top 5 Games of 2017

This is one of those years where every game even in the runner-up list could easily be in a conversation for the number one spot every other year. The industry was just on fire this year, with swaths of great releases of all shapes and sizes, giving everyone more options for what to play than they know what to do with.

At the end of a calendar year that many may declare one of the strongest for video games in recent memory, I can't help but feel slightly disappointed. For as many exciting new games that released this year there were other games that, frankly, let me down.

Well, it's that time of year again. The turkey has been eaten, black Friday deals have come and gone and now gamer's everywhere will be looking back on a year chock-full of titles to pick out their personal favorites.

Alex's Top 5 Games of 2017

This has been an amazing year for games. Nintendo released the Switch, which has quickly become one of my favorite systems for its portability and quality lineup. Besides that, we’ve seen resurgences in several of my favorite genres, platforming, and adventure, as well as a steady stream of my other pastime, RPGs. The year was so jam-packed that I still haven’t played many of the heavy hitters that could have potentially made my list like Persona 5 and Horizon: Zero Dawn. Even so, I’ve had enough great experiences that 2017 will go down as one of the best in my record book.

Allen's Top 5 Games of 2017

If there was ever a year to enjoy video games as escapism, it was 2017. Wait--didn't I say that about 2016? I suppose it doesn't matter. When life sucks, play video games! There were a lot of great games this year and even though I played a lot, I feel like I missed out on some potential gems. That said, the five presented below are some of the most memorable adventures I had this year. It was a difficult task, but I'm happy with my choices--and I hope you are too!

The word on the proverbial street is that 2017 was a good year for video games. I'm inclined to agree. It was tough to narrow down my Top 5 this year as most of my Top 5 could have been interchanged with anything in my honorable mentions list. I'd like to keep my intro short and just jump in, so let's do that, onto the list!

James Robinson's Top 5 Games of 2017

That is not to say that these don't often go hand in hand; but I will take a graphically inferior, old school, polygonal game that oozes enjoyment over a mediocre but well-polished AAA game any day. 2017 was a great year for games that embody the spirit of fun, and my list is in no particular order, but it does exemplify the games I had the most amount of fun playing.

Brian's Top 5 Games of 2017

For such a crazy dumpster fire of a year, 2017 was surprisingly good for games. I couldn't play everything I wanted, by virtue of not having a Nintendo Switch (and actually wanting a Nintendo Switch), but what I did play I, for the most part, enjoyed.

But there was also a good reason that I missed out on so many new ones this year, and that is because I spent well over 200 hours between two titles that I loved dearly.  This is technically, a Top Five list, but it might as well be a Top Two list because they are two of the greatest games so far of this generation.

Anyway, there have been some excellent stories told and some exciting advancements made this year. Despite our troubles, I am more excited than ever to see where video games can take us. And hey, it's been superb year for shooting Nazis.

For all its ups and downs, however - wonderful surprises and deplorable controversies - the one thing 2017 was certainly not lacking in was video games.  Excellent video games.  The kinds of spectacular, watershed video games that just may, in the future, mark 2017 as one of the very best.

Mark's Top 5 Games of 2017

For a while there, it seemed like the flood of new, generally excellent games would never stop. And this year, the goodness was not just from indie darlings but the often-maligned big-budget studios as well. Sure, there were some duds and disappointments but 2017 set the bar incredibly high for games moving forward.

Michael's Top 5 Games of 2017

I'm on the bandwagon; 2017 was a stellar year for gaming, saturated with titles well-received by consumers everywhere. And I'll admit, there's a decent stack I have yet to play through as we make our way into cold, brutal January. But I've played enough to know why so many people point out this year as one of the best. We saw franchises honing their craft left and right, producing stellar entries that will be talked about for years.

Chit Ko's Top 5 Games of 2017

2017 was a great and exciting year for me. Nintendo made itself relevant again with the stellar release of the Switch console along with games that redefined genres, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, while Sony had graced us with awesome exclusive titles like Horizon Zero Dawn, making it a great year for happy console owners. Now that 2017 is almost over, let me pick some of my most favorite (read: most memorable) games of the year.

Jukka's Top 5 Games of 2017

If in the last year had I difficulties in choosing five exceptionally good games, this year the situation is completely opposite. There was an abundance of excellent games pushing through, especially the first quarter was loaded with worthy titles. I had to leave out some awesome games which in any other year would have easily made into the top five. You won’t see holiday season big-sellers in this list because I’m really not into annual updates of hit game franchises. Big production values never impress me as much as heart and soul put into the game.
