Top Games of the Year 2005

Another year has passed us by, and again we look back at the great games that have thrilled us and made a long-lasting impression. Without much further ado, I present to you my selection for Games of the Year for all modern video games platforms.

Nintendo DS

When the system was first launched, many said the dual screen feature was juts a fad, one that won't last long. But over the months it has matured and with a string of blockbuster titles under its belt, it has become a popular choice for handheld gamers and Nintendo loyalists.

Sony PSP

Developed by Sony to check the dominance of Nintendo in the very lucrative handheld market, the PSP has somewhat fizzled since it's high-profile launch, mostly due to the lack of quality titles. But its powerful multimedia capabilities have made it a must have item for gadget lovers worldwide.

GameCube

Traditionally the giant of the video games industry, the GameCube has lagged far behind the market leader PlayStation 2 and to some extend newcomer Xbox. Known for its highly original and fun games for the younger gamers, GameCube seriously needs to boost its gaming library to compete with the other players.

PlayStation 2

Having overtaken the Walkman as Sony's most popular brand, the PlayStation 2 has grown from strength to strength. Well known for popular genre exclusives like the Final Fantasy and Sly Cooper series, the PS2 has continued it stranglehold at the top, with plenty of support from in-house studios and third party developers.

Xbox

Attempting to inject a bit of competition into the console wars, Microsoft came in, flexing its massive financial muscle and released the Xbox to the masses. Although the most powerful of the current-gen consoles, the Xbox has failed to seriously challenge the PS2. Granted Halo and Project Gotham Racing were runaway successes, but the Xbox has not done well in genres others than FPS and racing.

Xbox 360

Again seeking to put one up on the PS2, Microsoft kickstarted the next-generation by bringing in the Xbox 360, a good six months from Sony's targeted release of PlayStation 3. Although it's too early to pass judgment on the console, its launch title certainly shows promise of much better things to come from the Redmond giant.
