2017 was a great and exciting year for me. Nintendo made itself relevant again with the stellar release of the Switch console along with games that redefined genres, such as The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, while Sony had graced us with awesome exclusive titles like Horizon Zero Dawn, making it a great year for happy console owners. Now that 2017 is almost over, let me pick some of my most favorite (read: most memorable) games of the year.
Favorite Game Released Before 2017, Played in 2017: Dragon Quest VII 3DS
Dragon Quest VII 3DS remake is a beast of a classic JRPG. It was originally released on Playstation 1 back in 2001 and this massive JRPG got a complete remake on the 3DS. Sure, the game itself is a classic turn-based RPG, but what's amazing about this game is its extensive scope and overall content. The game is very long and filled to the brim with tons of side-quests, hidden treasures, dungeons, and optional bosses. If you are looking for a great JRPG to spend time with on handheld, this is definitely the game to pick.
2017 Honorable Mentions
20XX, Horizon Zero Dawn, Yomawari : Midnight Shadows, Mario + Rabbit : Kingdom Battles, Last Day of June
Top 5 Games of 2017
5. Final Fantasy XIV Stormblood
Final Fantasy XIV is, by no mean, a perfect game. It is a flawed game and the developers acknowledged that. The improvements that the game received over the course of time is a testimonial to that acknowledgment. The latest expansion Stormblood is another firm step in the right direction for the game that was once a flaming disaster. I can't get enough of being a Red Mage! Definitely one of the most memorable games of the year 2017 for me.
4. Monster Hunter Stories
"It is like Pokemon with all the charming (frustrating) elements from Monster Hunter in it."... That would be the line I would use to describe Monster Hunter Stories. It is one of those weird spin-off games that turned out to be great. Sure, as a long time Monster Hunter fan, I am all too familiar with the premise of hunting down Rathalos(es) for their fangs and claws to embolden my weapons but I am not certainly prepared for the concept of how awesome it would be to train those fire-breathing wyverns and engage in kick-ass RPG combat with Dragon Ball style visual flairs! I have a great need for its sequel now.
3. Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario Odyssey is a very simple game at its core. It is designed to be one thing and one thing only - a fun game. Playing Super Mario Odyssey is like going to an amusement park with amazing features and attractions. Each and everything in this game is a carnival designed to fill you with a sense of exhilaration. Needless to say, I had a lot of fun with it, from my 1st gathering of a Power Moon to the 600th one until I hit the eventual burnout. This is definitely one of most fun games of 2017 and deserves a spot on my top 5 list.
2. Persona 5
Hoo boy! A traditional turn-based JRPG on console in 2017 and a great game to boot, it's like a wish come true! While it did not necessarily add many groundbreaking renovations to the genre that has long past its golden era, Persona 5 managed to awe me with its extremely smart, stylish and sleek presentation. The Phantom Thieves had stolen my heart and now it is my most favorite RPG of the year 2017.
1. The Legend of Zelda : Breath of the Wild
To be honest, I did not expect Breath of the Wild to be my type of game when I first heard that it is going to be an open-world game because the genre is starting to get stale in recent years. Most of them are now completely devoid of the sense of adventure and exploration. It is almost a standard in open world games nowadays to litter the map with chores in disguise as "quests", which do not really give any sense of exploration or discovery whatsoever. Even great games are guilty of this mundane game design.
Fortunately, Nintendo took a bold step in Breath of the Wild to deconstruct the stale open-world formula and reinvented it into a completely fresh experience. The game is cleverly designed to unleash your curiosity and creativity to experiment with whatever you come across in the game. The "what if..." ideas are rewarded in the game. For example, what if I attach octo balloons to a raft? Voila! I get an airship! Like a breath of fresh air, Breath of the Wild reinvigorated the open-world genre and set a new standard. Not only is this my Game of the Year 2017, it IS now one of my favorite games of all time.
