Can you give our readers an overview of what Infected is all about?
Infect the World with your PSP! You will make a unique character in your single-player game with an avatar from about a million different combinations. You will then face other players in multiplayer and, if you beat them, infect them with your character. They can then spread your character to others and your character will spread, like a virus, around the world.
What is the storyline in the game?
It's Christmas in New York and a virus is sweeping through the streets turning people into zombies. You've been bitten, but you're immune to the virus – so immune that your blood can kill the zombies if it gets into their bloodstream. So you get a special "viral gun" that shoots your blood into the bloodstreams of the zombies and makes them explode! You are the only hope New York has to save Christmas.
Can you describe to us some of the typical missions that we are going to be doing in the game?
There are five different mission types in the game. The most basic, a "Kill 'em All!" is about wiping out the zombies as quickly as possible. In other missions, you defend cops from the Infected and in others, you have to get civilians out of danger while preventing the Infected from going berserk and becoming aobut four times more deadly.
What sort of weapons will we have at our disposal?
Nearly 20 different weapons ranging from the basic pistol to the BMFG – which sends explosive rockets at your foes, knocking them into the air. There are also a ton of grenades, ranging from normal, to fire, to the street cleaner, which wipes out everything in its path. Finally, there's the viral chainsaw – set on chum!
We have heard the multiplayer is going to be unique? Can you tell us more about what the PSP multiplayer experience will be like?
As explained above, the big hook of multiplayer is that you can infect the losers with your virus. That means two things happen: 1) three of their single-player missions are infected with your character, so all the bad guys look like you and run around in your single-player game trying to kill you; 2) if the infected player beats someone else, they'll pass on your virus to the losers.
You can clean a virus off your system by either beating the three single-player games that were infected, or by passing your virus on to others in three other games.
Why did you decide to develop this game for the PSP, and what were your feelings on this platform?
We loved the idea of your PSP as an infectious device that you could use to infect your friends and family. There's something about a portable that leads to this kind of thing.
We're very excited about the PSP it has incredible capabilities.
What sort of things separates Infected from other games on the PSP?
Well, it's a super-fast and smooth action game. It's about pulse-pounding action, which there hasn't been a lot of. One of the things we're very proud of is the sound – it really stands out. You'll hear the sounds of New York in chaos, gunfire, explosions, people screaming, zombies groaning. It's a very rich audio environment.
But the biggest deal, of course, is the idea of infecting other people. It's new and it's fun.
If you had to pick your favorite thing about Infected what would it be and why?
My personal favorite is the little touches that come with being infected. You see where the person who infected you came from. If you go to your save game, it looks different and shows you that this save game is infected. But we're also really happy with the story elements. Between missions, you get audio briefings that are very entertaining.
And when will the game be releasing to store shelves?
It's done, baby! It's on store shelves as I write this.
