IRD1 Q & A

This week we focus on IRD1, an independent developer for the very hush-hush 'PS2 Project', an upcoming PS2 game. We interviewed Zain Dinath, the President for IRD1 on the PS2 Project and general development in the gaming industry.

IRD1 How long has IRD1 been in the gaming industry?
IRD1 was incorporated in 1999, but the founders have been in their various fields of expertise for a number of years before starting our game company. We were one of the first independent developers signed on for the PlayStation2.

Why did you choose to develop for PS2 instead of other consoles?
We view Sony and the PS2 as becoming the dominant force in the video game industry. The PS2 is a great product and presents developers with oppurtunities that are better than ones found on either the Gamecube or X-Box. And, of course, it play movies!

What do you think the current state of competition in the industry? How does that affect small and new developers?
Competition doesn't really exist because this business is all about who creates the next big thing. Nintendo did it with Pokemon and Neversoft with Tony Hawk Pro Skater. IRD1 concentrates on making fun games; we really don't care what everyone else is doing. A small developer has just as much of a chance of creating a great game as a huge publisher. Actually, most great games are from small developers and not the big publishers, just look at Half Life.

What can you tell us about the 'PS2 Project'? (just to wet our readers' appetite)
Details regarding "PS2 Project" are still not available, but we will be leaking a few tidbits of information on our website (www.ird1.com) in the very near future.

Are you are gamer yourself? If yes, what genre of games do you prefer?
I love games. Everyone in our software lab loves video games. I have owned every game console at one time or another. I love games like River Raid, Street Fighter, and of course every Shigeru Miyamoto game.

Where do you see IRD1 5 years from now?
IRD1 will strive to make games that are, above all else, fun to play. Hopefully, everyone will enjoy the games we create and with your support, continue making fun games for a very long time.
