The movie may have passed us by, but the long awaited 'proper' Terminator game, featuring the Governor himself is here. Jim Galis, Executive Producer for Terminator 3: The Redemption shares his insights into the creative use of Terminator license and expectations for this highly anticipated title.
First if you could please tell us your name and your involvement in Terminator 3: The Redemption?
Jim Galis, Executive Producer.
So what kind of things can we plan on doing in Terminator 3: The Redemption?
You can plan on playing a Terminator title that gives you non-stop action, cool Endo-killing combo moves, visions of the Terminator universe never seen before and, of course, a first chance to be "the Terminator!"
Do you feel that the T3 movie license has hindered the overall product at all?
Not at all, in fact, the licensor, C2 Pictures, allowed the designers to include our own pieces of the T3 universe, and take the game story line beyond the movie. Having the rights to the likeness of Arnold is huge, and gives the player a new level of immersion in a Terminator game.
What do you think are some of the biggest accomplishments made with this game?
One of the biggest goals of the game was to "break the mold" on Terminator titles. We wanted to push the limits in many directions, and provide the player a unique experience with driving action and 3rd person character play. This game is really a thrill ride through the Terminator universe, and we want players to come away wishing they had more.
What games, if any influenced the production of the game?
The team was comprised of driving game veterans, which was a large part of Paradigm's background. Previous driving title experience helped to form the level designs and high-intensity action elements.
We also tried to use what was learned from previous Terminator and 3rd person character games, and refine those features to the max. For example, the on-foot character camera was constantly tweaked and focus group tested to insure it is something the player will like, and can get comfortable with quickly.
What was your favorite part of working on the game?
The most unique part of this development was creating our pieces of the post-apocalyptic Terminator world. The environments, vehicles and enemies seen in the Future and Alternate Future levels have never been seen before in any Terminator movies. C2 Pictures allowed us to push the limits of imagination and creativity to build this unique universe. The concept artists and designers came up with some intriguing moments in the game, something every player should experience in all levels!
What consoles will the game be available for?
The game is available on PS2, Xbox and GameCube.
Did the team encounter any problems during development? How did you sort them out?
Developing a game is all about problem solving from start to finish. In that respect, we were able to form a team that really got into the concept and the gameplay and was willing to go the extra mile to get features in.
For example, some of the combo moves that were imagined by animators, engineers and designers were not included in the original specification for the game. But the cool factor they could add was huge, so we managed to work them in. At times it was not easy, but the team had a vision for the game and wanted the player to experience everything they could.
How does Terminator 3's visuals compare to other titles on the market?
We feel the graphics quality on this title will rival if not surpass many titles out there. The artistic style used is very elaborate, taking into account every detail to push the universe. Every level, vehicle, enemy and NPC went through a rigorous concept phase, in order to insure consistency with the license and the design.
Players will be able to see some pretty awesome special effects, for instance the explosions used when the Collectors disintegrate in the Alternate Future Titan level. These are some things not seen in other games currently on the market.
Who do you expect the game to appeal to most?
Any player that craves non-stop arcade type action will find Redemption a blast! The player will be rewarded additional "Terabytes" for faster finish times, better combo use and more enemy kills. These "Terabytes" will strengthen Arnold's abilities and give the player added depth in level play.
True Terminator fans will also have fun with the Arnold recorded one-liners, like "Don't loose your head" after Arnold blows the skull off a vulnerable Endo in his way!
Why should our readers go out and purchase Terminator 3: The Redemption when it's released?
Real Terminator fans should buy the game to see what the universe could be in the Future world. The game appeals to a broad range of players, who get into fast paced action, cool visuals and awesome looking characters.
Players will be impressed with the damage states that Arnold goes through, when bits of his outer skin are blown off only to reveal the underlying Endoskeleton! That is something that any player will appreciate!
There is also a 2 player cooperative mode, which allows you and your buddy to replay 3 of the 14 levels as heli-mounted Resistance soldiers. You get a chance to mow down tons of Skynet forces from the air!
When should we expect to see the game hit store shelves?
Games should hit stores early September.
