Instead of talking about Apple’s latest smartphone, I think we should take a moment to mourn the unjust passing of a fellow gamer, and appreciate the lengths to which his friends will go to remember him.
For those of you who haven’t been keeping up with world news today, you can read about the attacks on the US Embassy in Libya here.
One of the four Americans killed in the attack was named Sean Smith, but people on the internet know him as Vile Rat. Sean made a lot of friends through Eve: Online , a science fiction game that has you roaming the universe with endless possibilities.
Eve:Online fosters an incredible sense of community among players, and that shows through the tributes that Sean’s online friends are posting for him. You can read online eulogies from his fellow players here and here. Staff at CCP Games, the developer of Eve Online have also spoken out, saying that he was a “true force” in the Eve community who attended the yearly player council that CCP hosts.
What is most striking, though, is to see how many virtual space stations and outposts are being renamed in Sean’s honor. You can take a look here to see the latest total. It is at the same time sad and awe-inspiring.
I speak on behalf of our staff in saying that Sean will be missed. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his friends and family during this difficult time.
