Overview

I can't even write this review fast enough to express all of my thoughts. I am in awe right now. Finally, a ton of great video game soundtracks are being released in America. One of the first was Final Fantasy IX: Uematsu's Best Selection, a 33-song soundtrack from the hugely popular video game.

I'll start the review by going over some of the soundtrack's highlights.

"Memory Erased by a Storm" is a brilliant track. It's very different, but is clearly a Final Fantasy composition. Nobuo Uematsu's trademark style is prevalent throughout the entire song.

"Battle 1," the first battle theme in the game, is excellent.

"Over the Hill" should be cherished because it is the last world map theme ever composed for a Final Fantasy game. FF's world map themes have always been peaceful, emotional tunes that played while you were going from one town to another. They are always instantly recognizable, and usually end up being one of the most popular songs, if not THE most popular song in the game. It saddens me to see the world map themes go, but I will always remember Mr. Uematsu's grand finale.

"Zidane's Theme" is just like the character it was composed for. It goes through many changes, starting out fast and intense, but later slows down to something more relaxing. Then, just before speeding up again, the song makes another change. The change is kind of hard to describe, but anyone who's played FFIX knows that this is the best part of the song. The emotion is increased as a deeper sound is revealed. But then, when the song ends and you want to hear it again, something stops you from hitting the back button -- "Cid's Theme." I don't even have to talk about his theme because it needs no description.

Another one of my favorite songs is "Freya's Theme." Freya's theme is one of the darker songs of FFIX, featuring a unique sound all its own. It's also very emotional. I don't cry when I hear it, but I definitely feel the pain that the characters are feeling. Nobuo Uematsu is one of the few composers who can turn nearly any story into a tear-jerker. As an aspiring game developer, I can only hope to create a game some day that does to others what the Final Fantasy series has done to me.

Overall

Reviewing this product was a blast for me, because I finally got to revisit the world of Final Fantasy IX through its amazing soundtrack and share my enjoyment with others. It was so much fun to hear all of these songs again. From "A Place to Call Home" to "A Song from Her Memory," Music From FFIX is a masterpiece. It has many new sounds, but there is a hint of Final Fantasy VI, VII and VIII in almost every track. The subtle music from past FF's will surely please every fan of the series.
