Overview

Without a doubt, Final Fantasy X has the best soundtrack ever composed for a video game. The music is the main reason why I love that game so much. Had it not been for the music, FFX would have barely made an impact on my life. The story was powerful, but the music absolutely blew me away.

I can finally enjoy the music away from the game now that the soundtrack is here. TokyoPop, the leading anime and video game soundtrack publisher, has released a 17-track compilation entitled Final Fantasy X: Uematsu's Best Selection.

First off, I'd like to say that I am so glad that they included Besaid's theme on this soundtrack. Actually, glad doesn't cut it -- I'm ecstatic! I fell in love with this song immediately. It's one of the best songs in the game, but it is only played for a very short amount of time. With this CD, I can listen to it whenever I desire. Sometimes I put Besaid on repeat and listen to it over and over again! I sound obsessed, I know, but if you've played Final Fantasy X, I'm sure you understand my love for the music.

>From the moment that Zanarkand's theme began playing, I knew that this was going to be the epic masterpiece that I had been waiting for. I knew that I Was going to be enamored with FFX. Zanarkand's theme is by far the greatest intro theme ever composed for a video game. I knew absolutely nothing about the game's story, but that song told me everything. The look on Yuna's face...it was priceless. There is no other song quite like it. It's simple, yet brilliant. I never knew that so much emotion could be crammed into one song.

I was disappointed when Square removed to the main FF theme from the title screen (the one that plays when you boot up Final Fantasy VII, among others), but Zanarkand more than made up for it.

After the hard-rock sounds of "Otherworld," the soundtrack moves onto an intense battle -- "Run!!" Track four, "Battle Theme," is pure classic Final Fantasy. It's not a carbon copy, but there are many similarities between it and the battle themes of FFVII and FFVIII. I found myself unconsciously moving my feet to the beat of the music, just like I did when playing through the game earlier this year. Another great battle theme follows, "Enemy Attack."

"The Sending" really surprised me. I usually don't like that kind of music, but I was pretty impressed by this song. It blends perfectly with Yuna's spiritual dance.

"Blitz Off!" rocks, and "Wandering" packs an emotional punch. It really gets to me every time I hear it.

Overall

It's been a long time since I've made such extensive use of the repeat button. You know you have a perfect song on your hands when you are able to play it five times in a row and still love it just as much as you did the first time you heard it. To say that I am in absolute awe would be a huge understatement. If I could, I would give this song alone a 20. 10 may be the highest rating, but it is not nearly high enough to describe FFX's greatness. I never thought that I would play another RPG with a soundtrack as powerful as Final Fantasy VII. I was wrong, very wrong, and I could not be happier. FFX's music reaches a new height of perfection. It's the Titanic of video games -- all video games. There never has been, and probably never will be, a better soundtrack than FFX.
