Overview

Someone kidnapped the daughter of a prominent Chinese businessman (who is also a triad leader) and your job is to find here. Fear Effect (FE) plays just like an action movie, with plot twists and shocking revelations. You take control of 3 characters - Hana, Glas and Deke, and try to rescue her from her captors, all the while trying to stay alive.

Gameplay

The only gripe that I have is that FE uses Resident Evil's controls, which means that you have to be quite skilled in moving the characters around (and believe me you'll be running here and there in FE). The plus thing is that FE has a very useful dodge function, which you MUST master in order to beat the enemies and bosses in the game.

You have the choice of weapons and items. One that I particularly like is the double pistols, which reminds me of Hong Kong action movies.

To progress further in the game, you'll have to solve various puzzles, that unlock levels and lets you gain secrets items and weapons. They are not too difficult, but requires lateral thinking and some element of luck on your part.

Graphics

FE starts of with an incredible opening scene, reminiscent of the cult movie 'Blade Runner'. The characters' animation is smooth - you could swear that you're watching a Japanese anime instead of playing a PlayStation game. FE uses pre-rendered animated scenes for the background, while the characters are anime textured polygonal models, so the rendering is very detailed and sharp. Full marks here.

Fun Factor

FE is fun to play because of it's exciting storyline and fast action sequences. I died quite a lot in FE, but the draw of the game is too strong to make me quit it. FE gives you more motivation to continue and further advance the plot.

Overall

Fear Effect is a great game and advances the action/survival horror genre immensely. Definately a must have for those who are tired of the Resident Evil and Tomb Raider series.
