Overview
The storyline in FM3 is a classic for any RPG - the main character discovers himself in the wrong place at the wrong time. The setting takes place in the future, where the world is divided into several pilitical factions/alliances, each with aspirations of world domination. Our hero, Kazuki Takemura discovers that his government is hiding up a deadly secrets, and proceed to investigate with the help or other characters.
Gameplay
If you're expecting another Xenogears, you'll be disappointed. Here, you can't move your characters around in the world. Progression is achived via series of text based menus. Some gamers would find it dull, but I think this approach complements the gameplay and adds makes it unique compared to similar titles.
FM3 uses am improved version of the battle system in FFT (Final Fantasy Tactics). You can move and position your wanzers (giant robots) at strategic areas to gain an advantage over the opposition. The style is still turn-based, but this gives you more options, compared to just attack/defence in other RPGs.
What differentiates FM3 from other RPGs is the virtual Internet in the game (yes, you heard right). You can send/receive emails from other characters, find information on websites (called forums) or download cool stuff on your desktop.
Graphics
The opening FMV is superb, but that's to be expected from Square. While some might be turned off by the in-game graphics, I think the battle animations are quite good. For example when a wanzer is destroyed, it will tilt to one side, and fall on to the ground in a crumbling heap, while electric sparks flies all over it.
The environment or setting is reasonably detailed, as you are surrounded buildings, bridges and other structures in battle mode.
Fun Factor
This game is incredibly fun to play, and it will take you many hours to complete it. The joy of watching your opponents being blown off (limb by limb if you like) is great. The virtual Internet might be a bit tedious for some players, but when you get used to it, it will greatly aid you in progresing into the game.
Overall
Overall, FM3 is a great game. It's amazing how much gameplay and enjoyment that you can find on just one CD. FM3 promises a lot and it delivers in abundance. Kudos to Square for releasing yet another masterpeace.
