Overview

The game centres around a futuristic vision of Law Enforcement. The city of Los Angeles has fallen prey to various gangsters, drug dealers, psychos and generally unpleasant people.

Enter the good guy: as a trained pilot of the X1 Alpha police Unit, your job is basically hurting the aforementioned wackos, and to try and do so without being hurt yourself.

Wow, I haven't heard this storyline before! X1 Alpha is the spitting image of ED209 from the Robocop movie, and they've even thrown in some decidedly whack voice-overs to boot.

Gameplay

The 'Crime War', game is basically a 3D shoot-em-up, in which up to two players have to progress through a impressive 3D environment and wipe out various bad guys, vehicles and the all important bosses on the way.

The other section is 'Precinct Assault', which is basically two players (or one vs the AI)fighting for supremacy by activating turrets which can be found accross the map. Points can be spent on buying tanks and choppers of two sizes as well as on new bases or 'outposts', from which to launch multiple attacks. The aim of the game is to get a tank into the enemy base. This section will probably outlast the main game.

Graphics

The in-game graphics are quite presentable, the animation is generally smooth and the FMV is very good indeed. My only quibble would be that in the multiplayer game the Units are a bit blocky. All in all, however, not bad at all.

Fun Factor

Crime War is very engaging, but short-lived and offers little incentive to go back to it.

The Precinct Assault will last much longer, players will invent their own strategies, counter-strategies, counter-counter-strategies until every point scored becomes a decisive victory and every tank lost a crushing defeat.

Overall

To be recommended for two players only. So all lonely little muppets who sit inside on their own all day can forget it.

Very good, a worthwhile investment.
