Overview
At times when you look at the gaming world, you will probably see how caught up we have got with the shooters, and the sports titles that we really have forgotten about the simple pleasures we used to find in games such as Frogger. The Frogger series saw its first light on the big consoles in 1997 on the PlayStation, where it tried to take the series 3D to let people relive the good old days. Well now after a few more Frogger titles, the series is back with Frogger's Adventure: The Rescue for the PS2.
Gameplay
To start the review I mentioned how we have started to turn away from the simple pleasures that we used to find in video games, and there are some reasons for this. One of the biggest is the fact that the remakes of these older titles never seem to amount to much, and then end up with poor sales.
When you think of Frogger, you probably see the little green frog making it across streets without getting run over by various on coming objects. Well the image of Frogger has changed quite a bit from the original ways. Now Frogger is a big green frog, that wears shorts, and you would never guess it, but now the big green frog talks. There is even a story to go along with the game (bear with me on this one), the Firefly Swamp is being threatened to the death by Tyrannical Reptiles in power, who now have an ancient weapon in their possession. This is one of those stories I just watched and laughed hysterically because you can obviously see it was aimed toward the very young audience. It's nice to see them throw a story out there, but the story that is used becomes kind of annoying, but for the most part it does what it was there to do. So we have the story, but how does the game end up playing out, well it got its ups and downs.
If you have played any of the latest Frogger titles then you will be right at home with Frogger's Adventure: The Rescue. The gameplay is basically a clone of these older titles, where you basically do the same thing throughout the game, in a much cleaner fashion. Frogger himself cannot attack anything, so you will be dodging enemies and oncoming objects throughout the game. Throughout the levels there are save points so you won't have to go through the whole level if you make a mistake. But if you do run out of lives you will be forced to start at the beginning of the level which can a lot of times be frustrating.
There are bosses at the end of each level, who are not usually overly difficult but do take some time to figure out their patterns of attack. The bosses are usually pretty fun, and are at least somewhat of a challenge in the game.
In Frogger's Adventure you do not just have to play the story mode, because Konami also added a challenge and multiplayer mode. The multiplayer in many ways is the best mode of the game, where the single player becomes old and repetitive, the multiplayer helps quite a bit because you get to play with other people.
The controls of Frogger Adventure are pretty easy to get down, once you have played the game for a few minutes you should be able to get the game down pretty easily.
The biggest problem that hurts Frogger Adventures is the length, which is really quite short. The game isn't overly difficult so any fan of the Frogger series should not have any trouble beating the game in a few sittings.
Graphics
The graphics of Frogger Adventure aren't much, but it's Frogger, so must of us go into the game not expecting a whole lot out of it. The transition that Frogger has taken to the next generation consoles isn't overly impressive but considering the younger and less picky target audience, the graphics would suffice.
When you look at Frogger's Adventures there are two main things to consider analyzing the graphics and those are the character models and the environments. The character models have been improved from years past, there is much more detail placed on Frogger and his friends and they are a lot more colorful. On the downside the environments could have used some more work, they all start looking the same, and really look quite bland.
Overall the graphics of Frogger still could be a ways better then what they have put out in this version. There still could be a lot more detail, and some much more original environments.
Fun Factor
I personally enjoy a good game of Frogger and I had some good sittings of this game, but when it came down to it, this title really lacked anything new to the game. They could have easily added some more depth to the game with a longer story mode or even online capabilities. With that was provided the game was pretty fun, but showed many areas that could have used a lot of improvement.
Overall
It's Frogger, and it's in 3D. If you are into the whole Frogger scene you will definitely want to think about at least renting this one. If you're not a huge fan of the series, there probably isn't a big reason for you to rush out and grab this one.
