Overview
I have to say that although Capcom has been around for a long time and has come out with countless great titles, one that always reminds me of Capcom is the Mega Man series. Mega Man has been such an influential icon in the gaming industry (especially back ten or more years ago) that it is hard not to be excited about any Mega Man game that makes its way out on the consoles or handhelds. Today we are actually going to be checking out a compilation of some of the classic Mega Man X games that are now released on one disc for the PS2. So is Mega Man X Collection worthy of a purchase? Read our full review to find out!
Gameplay
It is pretty obvious that Capcom was pretty cautious when they put out the first Mega Man compilation over a year ago under the title of Mega Man Anniversary Collection. With the success of that compilation, Capcom has decided to venture out and do a compilation of the Mega Man X series. So basically in this compilation you get the majority of the Mega Man X games, which includes the first six in the series. Besides getting into the specifics, this compilation does contain some of the more popular and critically acclaimed titles in the X series.
For those of you who may not be that familiar with the Mega Man X series, a brief description of it would basically be an expansion upon the classic Mega Man series. Basically they just decided to take the series and continue it on in a much more stylish fashion. Mega Man becomes much "cooler" in the X series, with much better looking armor and moves. The X series was pretty popular as well and did expand upon the initial gameplay of the original Mega Man games.
So did Capcom try to upgrade any of these Mega Man X games? And the answer is no, not really. If you have played all of the included Mega Man X games before, then you can really expect nothing new in this game. I say this because like many compilations, this one just mindlessly plops the first five X games and emulates them onto the PS2. Speaking of emulation, which is not as easy as people think, the emulation of all the Mega Man X games were spot on. Similar to the Classic Collection, this compilation features some of the best emulation I have seen thus far. There were no real problems while playing the games, and everything plays identically to what it felt like on the original platforms that they came from.
The game does have some interesting extras with a few Mega Man games and some artwork, but nothing that is going to make anyone overly excited. The developers in my opinion needed to throw more goodies in the package to keep its value up, even after playing through these games. In the end the gameplay of the Mega Man X Collection was good, but unfortunately needed more extras to appeal to the masses.
Graphics
Graphically you are going to get exactly what you would expect from a compilation such as Mega Man X Collection. The emulation like mentioned previously is very good, and does a nice job of bringing these games onto the PS2. With that being said, nothing was really improved for this version, which would have actually made for a nice touch had the developers had the gumption to do so. In the end, I have no real complaints about the visuals, but no real praises either.
Fun Factor
I have to say that, being a fan of the Mega Man series, I really enjoyed this compilation. And although not all of the Mega Man X games are great, the compilation makes for a very fun and entertaining experience. If you are like myself and haven't played some of the old classic Mega Man X games in a while and wouldn't mind wasting hours away to do just that, then you are going to enjoy this compilation. My only complaint once again is the lack of goodies/extra, which really helped the classic compilation.
Overall
In the end, it just comes down to personal preference and your feelings on the Mega Man X series. If you are a fan of some of the games and want to give them another run through, then you are going to enjoy this game. I would like to mention one more time though that the emulation is good and causes no problems to the original games, and the extras although somewhat sparse, are fun to check out and mess around with.
