Overview
It was not long ago when we saw music make its way into the video game realm, making games solely based off of music. With games like Dance Dance Revolution, which let you play a game while dancing to the music, we have seen the genre grow from small to now a prominent part of the gaming industry. Konami has been one of the leaders of this music charge with the DDR series, as well as their recent hit Karaoke Revolution, which has had a few successful outings. Now Konami is lacing up their boots and putting on their cowboy hat, as they take Karaoke Revolution and put it into a country style. So how does the game end up turning out? Read our full review to find out!
Gameplay
So for those who have not played Karaoke Revolution before, you are probably wondering what this game is all about. And to describe the series is basically like American Idol, in that you are told to sing songs and are judged on your pitch. Seems easy enough right? Well the games have been challenging, especially for those who are musically challenged like me. But the games have also been extremely engrossing and addictive. So to say that people have enjoyed these games is an understatement. So now for the first time the series is going for a specific music style. So will the game still carry its same quality?
First off, I should mention that anyone who doesn't enjoy country music will probably not find much to enjoy about this game, because as the title says, this is all about Country Music. What you will find in this game is really a rehash of everything we have seen before in the series with a bunch of country songs. I have to say that out of the gate I was a bit disappointed to find the lack of new innovation in this game or any new features. This is really the same Karaoke Revolution that we have seen in the past, with country music being the focus.
The game does include some DDR and Eye Toy features that have been done before, both of which don't have all that great of integration into the game. These features are more gimmicks than full on features as they do not manage to add all that much to the gaming experience. I did like the idea of the Eye Toy support, as getting you into the game seems to be a bit more like Karaoke, but it just made the Eye Toy feel like it needed an upgrade.
There is really not much else to say about Karaoke Revolution: Country, because it really is a rehash of what we have seen before. This however is not a bad thing as the game manages to score country music just as well as it did with other genres in previous games. The game is fun and great party game. It is one that may not be always in your PS2, but is one that you can keep coming back to years on in.
Graphics
Visually the only thing that has changed in Karaoke Revolution: Country is the theme of the game, which is of course country. Outside of this the game still looks the same as it has since its introduction, with cartoonish character models and just bright, vibrant colors. This game is beginning to look a bit dated, but still manages to do enough not to be a burden on the game.
Fun Factor
I could say that this game has brought some of the most downright embarrassing times in my life. For any of you who have listened to me before, know I don't have a Karaoke voice. However the game is still an enjoyable one, one with a lot of good songs and modes to choose from. If you were expecting some new intense modes, then you may be disappointed. But if you have enjoyed the Karaoke Revolution formula in the past, I think you will continue to enjoy your experience in the Country edition.
Overall
In the end, Karaoke Revolution: Country is a good game that could have been a lot better had they done some sort of new mode that used the Country theme to their advantage. Instead, this is just another Karaoke Revolution game with country music as their focus. If this sounds entertaining to you and you love country music, then your going to love this game.
