Michael's Top 5 Games of 2011

Wow, what a year 2011 has brought us. It seems that every month we were getting high caliber games that could easily make anyone's goty post. Plus we can forget about taking the summer off of gaming with publishers being more aggressive during that season as well as Microsoft's incredible Summer of Live promotion. This was a fun list to make, but I would love to expand this to my top ten, maybe even top twenty games of 2011. Yes, we've had that many great games this year.

Usually by this time in a console cycle we are talking about all the great games that will come from future consoles; but that’s just not the case this year. It’s really impressive to see how well developers have managed to continue understanding the capabilities of the current consoles. With that being said it’s now time to look at the best of the best and so without further ado here are my Top 5 games of 2011.

My game of the year picks always tend to be a little off-kilter. It's not that I have a separate "cooler than you" mentality that keeps me from enjoying the big hits- certainly, I do. You'd have to be crazy to not get a huge thrill from punching sharks in Batman or having skydiving firefights in Saints Row. The problem is that I haven't actually played those moments because I haven't played those games. Again, it's not my fault. I can't afford all the huge games that come out this year, so I make due with a lot of indie or smaller projects which, thankfully, are fantastic. Do I complain? No, because the games I choose are still awesome. They just might not be the usual ones you'd think of.

Although there were some titles which left me disappointed, for the most part this year was an amazing year for people who like to play video games. In fact, writing this list and deciding on a Top 5 was a seemingly impossible prospect. When I sat down and went through every month's releases to make a list of candidates, I ended up with 20 wonderful games that were awesome in some way but these 5 were exceptional above the rest.

This year has been rather monumental in terms of game releases. I don't think I have seen such a high quality release calendar since 2007, and the party looks set to continue deep into 2012. For a generation that is supposedly on its last legs, it certainly isn't showing it in terms of both lineup and sales. Next year I do hope to see more original franchises, as this year was very sequel heavy (4 out of the 5 games I have chosen are part of an existing franchise). While sequels are not necessarily a bad thing, change is nice because it brings with it innovation and brand new worlds to become invested in.

This year has definitely been a crazy one for gaming and our money. It’s now time to see who has won the coveted prize of ‘Game of the Year’. I’m sure some of you can easily you’re your picks, but I have a hard time saying a particular title is of ‘Game of the Year’ material. However, there are a lot of games that have reached that level of awesomeness and left a lasting impression on our wallets, hearts or both. Many games have reached their last installment, which leaves us only to guess as to what is next for their story and if the ending was good enough closure to make us feel better that we were emotionally invested in those games.

2011 has been some year. With the actual usage of Kinect and Move, deaths of some companies and franchises, and to say the least rebirth of great games. We all have had to trudge through the crap, but around the holiday season we get to praise and compliment the games in which we love. Here is my Top 5 Games of the Year.

I think games are the only place where I see so much active disdain for sequels, with gamers using them to cite an apparent lack of originality in the industry. Four out of my five game of the year picks are sequels, but they are awesome sequels. They took the core things I loved about the franchises, and expanded upon them to make more rich, diverse, and enjoyable games. I hope that industry folk look at these titles as the way to do sequels right going forward.

Wow, so many games, so few spots to fill. You know, a "games of the year" list is a fickle thing. When deciding what makes the list and what place it takes, you have to try to reconcile between your favorite games and the best games. You may think that those are the same thing, and many times they may be, but not always. For instance, my favorite movie of all time is The Fugitive with Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. I would not consider it, though, one of the best movies. So it is with games. Advent Rising is one of my favorite games. But it wouldn't even make my list of top 100 games.

2011 came and went, and throughout the year we were treated to some seriously hard-hitting titles, with triple A-games and high caliber sequels filling the list. I've played some legitimately amazing games this year, but only one can win this five-way brawl -- so here goes my picks for the top 5 games of the year.

What a year for video games, eh? After the onslaught that was October and November, I was surprised to go back and discover the sheer number of games that came out at the start of the year and during the summer drought. While 2011 saw the return of favored franchises, we also saw some great new IP from our favorite development studios. Putting this list together was pretty difficult. I could have easily stretched this list out into a Top 10 Games of 2011, but I couldn't and after losing a night's sleep over it, I feel pretty confident in my choices. In my mind, it isn't enough for a game to be just "good."
