As the year comes to an end, I couldn’t possibly have asked for a better way to go out than with a bunch of brand new titles to look forward to in 2017. While it can be fun to look forward to new adventures, it’s also important to appreciate what we have played over the year and pick out those games that we hold in high regard. I did end up playing a hefty bunch of bad games, but lots of fantastic games also came out this year and it is definitely a bit of a challenge to choose a favorite.

2016 was a year of staggering highs and disappointing lows. There weren't as many standout games as last year by a long shot, but I can genuinely say I've discovered a few new gaming obsessions this year. Though there were only a few, each of the strongest games of the year offered enough variety to make this a rewarding year for videogames overall. However, with games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Persona 5 being pushed into 2017, I think I will remember this as the year of game delays more than anything else.

I will always remember 2016 as the year when my passion for games grew to bigger heights. Games have become an even more important part of my life, and I am always grateful for the opportunity to talk about them in this capacity. This was quite a year for gaming too, with numerous big game releases. As usual, a good number came out near the tail end of the year, so I haven’t been able to experience them all yet. I already anticipate games that I believe would make this list if I played them, including Final Fantasy XV. Nevertheless, I spent many hours this year with the Nintendo 3DS, just in time for the Switch’s launch in 2017. Most of my top games reflect the fond memories I’ve made with the little handheld that could.
