Do Game Demos Hurt Gamer's Expectations?

Demos are an odd feature of the gaming industry. Some say that demos give us that early tease of a game we’re looking forward to or help us decide whether a game is for us or not. Others argue that game demos don’t show enough of a game to give the player the right idea about the game, or worse they give away too much and make the game feel obsolete. Think back to your times playing demos, if you do, and think about how many games you’ve purchased after playing the demo. I know that personally I’ve only bought one game in recent memory after playing the demo.

Ashley's Top 5 Games of 2012

Our resident British editor Ashley Chittock has submitted his picks for Game of the Year 2012. His list has to be one of the most diverse lists out of any of our editors on the site. He has a puzzle game, sports game, a frustrating game, a third person shooter, an an episodic adventure game. Quite the list.

Joel's Top 5 Games of 2012

This is probably my favorite writing assignment of the year. Looking back at my favorite gaming experiences over the past year. Although 2012 wasn’t the best year of this generation I would argue it might be the most diverse. This is the first time in recent memory that only one of the five games would I have predicted at the beginning of the year hitting my GOTY list.

Allen's Top 5 Games of 2012

Another year, another contender for game of the year! Maybe it's just me but it felt like this year was a bit more subdued than previous years and with few exceptions, there weren't a whole lot of major AAA titles. That's not to say 2012 wasn't a good year for video games. Emotions ran high with the conclusion of the Mass Effect trilogy, a starry-eyed MMO didn't make it a full year without going free to play, video games proved once again that they have the capacity to make the player cry and some fresh new properties proved that even as we near the end of this console cycle, there is still so much more fun to be had.

Condra's Top 5 Games of 2012

I can’t remember a year in which it was more difficult to pare down my choices for best game of the year down to just 5, or even 10, than 2012. My initial list of candidates for great games I played this year was 34. 34! I’ve never had more than 19 choices before this, and in the end, I consider each of my 10 favorite games this year as interchangeable GOTY winners. For that reason, I’ve decided to present my top 5 not so much as a ranked last, but a collection of superlatives and the reasons for why these particular games are so important. Let’s begin.
