Alex's Top 5 Games of 2017

This has been an amazing year for games. Nintendo released the Switch, which has quickly become one of my favorite systems for its portability and quality lineup. Besides that, we’ve seen resurgences in several of my favorite genres, platforming, and adventure, as well as a steady stream of my other pastime, RPGs. The year was so jam-packed that I still haven’t played many of the heavy hitters that could have potentially made my list like Persona 5 and Horizon: Zero Dawn. Even so, I’ve had enough great experiences that 2017 will go down as one of the best in my record book.

For all its ups and downs, however - wonderful surprises and deplorable controversies - the one thing 2017 was certainly not lacking in was video games.  Excellent video games.  The kinds of spectacular, watershed video games that just may, in the future, mark 2017 as one of the very best.

As the year comes to an end, I couldn’t possibly have asked for a better way to go out than with a bunch of brand new titles to look forward to in 2017. While it can be fun to look forward to new adventures, it’s also important to appreciate what we have played over the year and pick out those games that we hold in high regard. I did end up playing a hefty bunch of bad games, but lots of fantastic games also came out this year and it is definitely a bit of a challenge to choose a favorite.

2016, what a year for videogames. As time for gaming seems to shrink for me, perfectly-timed games are a rare luxury that standout among droves of games trying to pack their worlds with endless quests and side missions. In 2015 I was overwhelmed with open worlds, side quests, and 50+ hour games. In 2016, I found quite a few games that satisfied me across the board and didn’t need three days worth of game time to do it.
