Ghost Recon: Breakpoint Preview

While its production values somewhat suffer in comparison to recent action games like Gears 5, Breakpoint promises to build on the changes made in Wildlands and move the franchise in the direction of other tactical shooters.

Magic: The Gathering Arena Preview

Unlike newer DCCGs, Magic The Gathering wasn't originally created with digital gaming in mind, so the transition to digital can be tricky to pull off. Arena does a superb job of giving players the in-game tools needed to make the process go as smoothly as possible.

Night Call Preview

There are never enough good whodunnit games out there, certainly not in the triple-A market. As always, indie scene comes to rescue when you want to vex your wits and perception. Night Call is a bit different murder mystery, though, and its premise is particularly interesting. You’re not playing a copper, you’re playing a cabbie!

Outward Preview

If you’re a fan of big, open, and somewhat deep RPGs, then I definitely have to recommend Outward to each and every one of you. It feels like a mix between Skyrim, Dark Souls, Ark (or most survival games for that matter), and Fable.

Foundation Preview

Funded by Kickstarter, Foundation is a medieval city builder that eschews the doom and gloom of the dark ages for a more bucolic — though not exactly fantasy-based — approach, with appealing cartoon visuals, lush scenery and rolly-polly little villagers that are happy to build and gather and craft.

Breach Preview

Conceptually, there are some strong ideas driving the game. Other than a tutorial mission, there is no real narrative or campaign at this stage of release, but the core mechanics of moving, shooting and spell casting are strong and there is some fun to be had as playing the Big Bad.

Anew: The Distant Light Preview

It is one thing to make a demo fun for a short time, and it is another thing entirely to make a good, balanced experience that can be fun from beginning to end. Resonator has accomplished the former. We’ll find out soon, hopefully very soon, whether they can accomplish the latter, too.

Edge of Eternity Preview

With colorful visuals and excellent music, Edge of Eternity successfully channels the spirit and mechanics of classic JRPGs, and interestingly goes for a niche that few indie developers have explored. Fans of Final Fantasy should check this one out, as well as anyone looking for an easy to pick up and engaging turn-based fantasy game.

Elderborn Preview

With so many games trying to be the biggest, deepest and most feature-rich, there’s something to be said for minimalist design that does one thing (hopefully) really well. Of course, the danger is in going too far and not providing enough content or variety. Elderborn is a first-person melee-focused dungeon crawler, or as the developer describes it, “Doom with swords and hammers instead of guns.”

Green Hell Preview

Arguments have been made for more realism in all sorts of game genres from shooters to survival games but often, added realism doesn't necessary translate to more fun or an engaging challenge, just frustration. One shot kills or game-ending snake bites might be true to life but don't make for enjoyable gameplay.

Postworld Preview

Set in the irradiated 2080s, Postworld is a post-apocalyptic shooter that takes a bit of Fallout and blends in a scoop of survival RPG and a helping of third-person shooter. Still in early access, Postworld comes from indie Russian developer Screwdriver Entertainment and although it has a solid premise and a few mildly original ingredients, the game is still very rough around the edges and unfortunately, deep into the core as well.

Deathgarden Preview

Deathgarden is an asymmetric team shooter with a lot of interesting ideas and a pretty steep learning curve. Although its heavy metalish title doesn't give you much of a clue, the game is a sci-fi, Hunger Games meets Evolve futuristic competition set on procedurally generally stages, where the roles are Runners or Hunter and the stakes are life or death.

Immortal: Unchained Preview

Immortal: Unchained is shaping up to be a product that action-RPG and Dark Souls fans will want to check out, in particular if the full game includes a bit more story and character development and a wider visual range.

Reign of Guilds Preview

Remember five years ago when it seemed like everyone was trying to create the next World of Warcraft? The Blizzard MMO inspired so many different entries into the genre that its hard to remember them all. For many reasons those games haven’t stuck around and the genre itself has become rather stale. That’s why when I had the chance to check out the very early days of development on Atlant Games new project Reign of Guilds it peaked my interest.

Abandon Ship Preview

No one has ever complained that the age of sail naval battle genre has been over-saturated, so I was looking forward to spending some time with Abandon Ship, now in early access. Snagging some mechanics from FTL, a Kraken or two from Pirates of Caribbean and iconography from 19th-century maps, Abandon Ship seems to be sailing along well towards a full release.

Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire Preview

“How would you improve upon the greatest isometric RPG ever made?”  If you are as much of a fan of Pillars of Eternity as I am, then you may find yourself pondering this question.  On April 3, Obsidian Entertainment intends to give us their answer when they release of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.  With the 2015 masterpiece Pillars of Eternity, Obsidian Entertainment finally delivered some excellent gameplay to augment their traditional strengths of storytelling and dialog.  It was a groundbreaking achievement for a studio that, until then, was best known for unorthodox expansion packs and sequels.
