So are you hooked to American Idol? How about Don’t Forget the Lyrics? Do you find yourself singing the shower, or wishing you could sing in front of a huge crowd? Well if you are into any of the following, then Singstar for the PS3 is a game that may interest you. Coming from the extremely successful lineup of Playstation 2 Singstar titles, Sony brings their sing-a-long title to the PS3 hoping that the new Singstar Store and new features will help migrate the Playstation 2 fans over to the PS3 version. Is it worth the upgrade? Read our full review to find out!

I am not qualified to criticize music, it is just not something I specialize in, so I won’t be reviewing the songs per say, but I will be critiquing the song selection as well as the game itself. So to start the review let’s run down the song list that is included with Singstar for the Playstation 3.

* Blink 182 - All The Small Things * Blur - Coffee & TV * Britney Spears - Toxic * Coldplay - Fix You * Gorillaz - Feel Good Inc. * Gwen Stefani - Cool * Junior Senior - Move Your Feet * Macy Gray - I Try * Musical Youth - Pass The Dutchie * Ne-Yo - So Sick * Orson - No Tomorrow * OutKast - Hey Ya * Primal Scream - Movin’ On Up * Pussycat Dolls - Beep * Radiohead - No Surprises * Razorlight - America * REM - Losing My Religion * Robbie Williams and Nicole Kidman - Something Stupid * Scissor Sisters - I Don’t Feel Like Dancing * Supergrass - Alright * The Automatic - Monster * The Cardigans - Lovefool * The Fratellis - Chelsea Dagger * The Killers - Mr Brightside * The Stone Roses - She Bangs The Drums * The Zutons - Valerie * Twisted Sister - We’re Not Gonna Take It * U2 - Beautiful Day * Weezer - Buddy Holly * Wolfmother - Love Train

After looking and singing to this list of songs, they really make you want to go online and buy more songs, I couldn’t be more underwhelmed by the song list in this first Singstar game for the PS3. Now granted this is not a themed version like we saw on the PS2, but instead is trying to capture all major genres with some hit songs, and some not so much. But with the expansive list that is already on the Singstar Store and still so many more to come, this doesn’t end up being all that big of issue.

Why you may ask? Because of how much Sony has done to really take this Singstar to the next level. For the first time since The Eye of Judgement, Singstar for the PS3 has given you a major reason to own a Playstation Eye camera. The reason for this is that Singstar makes great use of the camera by capturing video and snapshots of you while belting out your favorite tunes. These pictures and videos can be saved to your Hard Drive as well as posted online. Already there are some fantastic uploads, and it also makes it even more enjoyable to play with friends.

The online implementation of Singstar is fantastic, the social networking element of the game is fantastic, it is probably some of the best online implementation on a PS3 game. You won’t be playing against anybody online, which is a bit of a disappointment, but the community feature that you get to experience in Singstar is fantastic. The only feature really missing is the ability to battle online.

The game itself isn’t all that much different, you still have the pass the mic feature, you can duet on some songs, and of course can play all the songs by yourself. The game is a gigantic step forward but its enough to make it a very good reason to upgrade.

Visually there is no doubt that the move to the PS3 really did a lot to make a huge upgrade from what we saw on the Playstation 2. The videos are fantastic, they look great, are very strong in detail, and on an HD display really looks fantastic. There is obviously not that much to a Singstar game visually, but the new Playstation Eye does a lot to add to the experience as well with some fantastic video integration as well.

Fun Factor

If you have enjoyed Singstar in the past then there is even more for you to enjoy on the move to the Playstation 3. The online community features are really the highlight of the experience, so if your a fan of things like Myspace and Facebook the online experience is really something to be excited about. The song-list is that impressive, but when you take into account the hundreds of songs up for purchase the enjoyment of Singstar is as far as you want to take it.

Sure this isn’t the ultimate upgrade, there are still some areas where I would have liked to have seen more from the game. However in the end if your wondering if its time to upgrade to the Playstation 3 version of Singstar, this first entry is a great start and just show’s all of the great that is to come from Singstar on the PS3 in the future.
