Madden NFL 18 Review
Stories in sports games. We’ve been talking about the idea for over a decade and it’s just in the last couple of years we’ve seen the two big sports developers (EA & 2K) start investing in it. Last year both FIFA (from EA) and NBA 2K (from 2K Sports) made stories a huge pillar in their annual releases. This year, EA Sports is following up the success of Alex Hunter in “The Journey” with Longshot, a new story mode in Madden NFL 18.
Bottom line, FIFA 16 is not a huge step forward for the franchise. The play on the pitch continues to get better and better and the refinements this year are all welcome. I especially was impressed with the overall flow of a match. It continues to get closer to feeling like the real thing while still being one of the most enjoyable sports games on the market.
Rory McIlroy PGA Tour
When I look back on my week with Rory McIlroy PGA Tour, I came away feeling like it was a launch title. It's missing the robust features and course set that video game golf enthusiasts have come to know. It has a lot of the mechanics down well enough but the game doesn’t have enough content to warrant the price tag. The career mode is bare bones and the course selection is dangerously low. Unless you just can’t do without a golf game this year, you’d be better off going purchasing a game from the Tiger Woods back catalog.
The teams at EA Sports are undeniably having a hard transition to the next-gen, but FIFA 15 has weathered the transition quite admirably. Of course we want everything to be perfect in each new game, but then how could they keep us coming back for more each year? FIFA 15 has made enough changes and improvements to warrant an upgrade, and has done so without any yellow or red cards. There will be nothing to complain about when you pick up this year’s best soccer game, other than needing additional controllers so everyone can play.
EA Sports UFC
Its been a while since we've had a UFC game, so the good news is this is a pretty good UFC game. The bad news is there is still a good deal of room for improvement both in the career mode and on the mat. Regardless there is a ton of fun to be had in EA Sports UFC and if you're a fan of the sport this game is a worthy pick up for your new console.
NCAA Football 14
NCAA Football 14 feels like a great culmination of all the NCAA Football titles this generation. The new engine fixes a lot of the weird problems that occurred in the past few games and allows the running game to take center stage. I for one really enjoyed my time with NCAA Football 14 and find it to be a great swan song for this franchise on this generation of consoles. It makes me even more excited for what's to come from this franchise next year with new hardware behind it.
