Unravel Two Review
Three years ago, we all watched as a nervous but earnest Martin Sahlin presented Unravel during the EA E3 Press Conference. When the game was released the following year, I found Yarny’s adventure through the memories a profoundly moving, singular experience. It felt that the developers had said what they had to say. Fast forward two years and three press conferences later, and note my utter amazement when not only a sequel is announced but released the same day.
A Way Out Review
In an industry that’s often criticized for “playing things safe,” A Way Out is anything but: a story-driven cooperative game where you’re required to play the entire game in split screen with another person the whole time. To make a game like that takes a level of vision, sophistication, and outright brazenness that many in the industry just wouldn’t normally set out to do. The question now is, was it a risk worth taking?
Titanfall 2 Review
Even if you never touch the multiplayer side of Titanfall 2, the game is worth the price of admission for its creative and continually engaging single player experience. Challenging, puzzling, surprising, funny, and above all, satisfying, the campaign elevates Titanfall 2 to one of the best shooters of the year. Pair that stellar accomplishment with an equally full-featured competitive suite, and the result is the definition of "must buy."
Mirror's Edge: Catalyst
Mirror’s Edge: Catalyst is an admirable attempt to make a niche concept work. Unfortunately, it so intently focuses on avoiding the pitfalls of the previous game that it stumbles into a hole of its own. This reboot doesn’t feel like a second attempt at making the formula work, but rather an alternate game that runs parallel to the original. Ultimately, Catalyst offers something that no other game does, but like its predecessor, it feels like it could have been much more.
Bottom line, FIFA 16 is not a huge step forward for the franchise. The play on the pitch continues to get better and better and the refinements this year are all welcome. I especially was impressed with the overall flow of a match. It continues to get closer to feeling like the real thing while still being one of the most enjoyable sports games on the market.
