Master of Anima Review

Master of Anima from Passtech Games takes the strategic micro-management aspect from RTS (Real-Time Strategy) games and mixes it with the exploration and puzzle-solving elements from the adventure genre to make one fresh adventure-RTS hybrid. The individual designs of the game may not be entirely original, but the synergy between various gameplay elements is rather remarkable.

Golem Gates Review

Although collectible card games (CCGs) have been around for decades and a few heavy hitters continue to dominate the genre, new takes on the formula appear with some regularity. Lately it seems like CCGs have been bolted onto, blended with and dropkicked into a wide variety of other game genres. Golem Gates, for example, is a recipe that calls for one part CCG and one part real-time strategy game.

Battlezone: Combat Commander Review

Battlezone: Combat Commander is a fusion of first-person shooter and real-time strategy gameplay. You not only instruct units to create buildings to pump out new vehicles, you're also on the battlefield yourself, piloting those vehicles and directly engaging with the enemies. In fact, the only time you get a traditional real-time strategy view is when you activate the satellite uplink terminal in specific buildings.

Age of Empires: Definitive Edition Review

This might not be a popular opinion in 2018 but I still love real-time strategy (RTS) games. To this day every couple of months, I’ll boot back up an old Command & Conquer, Company of Heroes, or Age of Empires and run through a couple of skirmishes. For me, these real-time strategy games are comfort food. While my friends were off playing Quake, I was the Romans taking out hordes of Egyptians in my fifth street skirmish in Age of Empires II. RTS is a genre that’s all but disappeared, that is except for an updated versions of Age of Empires.

StarCraft Remastered

StarCraft is a masterpiece, a landmark game that remains as entertaining as it was in 1998. The question is whether Remastered's cosmetic upgrades are worth the $14.99, as the unvarnished original and Brood War expansion are already free from Blizzard. There are fans that would like to see the original game entirely remade with StarCraft 2-quality units, effects, and graphics but until that unlikely event happens, StarCraft Remastered will have to do.

Halo Wars 2 Review

Halo Wars 2 is not without its flaws. It doesn't have the depth of other RTS's, but it does control surprisingly well and multiplayer options are abundant. There may not be much lasting appeal for hardcore players, but it is certainly fun in the moment, especially for console players that aren't too familiar with the genre.

Total War: Warhammer

Sure, I may have some grudges that may never be removed from the great book, but in the end, this is the best experience I’ve had, bar none, when it comes to real time strategy games.

Ultimate General: Gettysburg

I found this to be a very fun and unique take on the genre. With the different AI settings (there is an option to boost it further if the default isn't challenging enough for you) and and the branching battles, this would be one fans of historical real time strategy games would definitely want to check out. Will history repeat, or will the south rise again?

Anomaly 2

11 bit studios continues to prove that a little innovation can go a long way. Anomaly 2 capitalizes on what made its predecessor so great by improving on an already unique take on the genre, adding great visuals, and a cleverly crafted competitive multiplayer that tower defense fans will surely enjoy.

Company of Heroes 2: The Western Front Armies

The Western Front Armies immensely improves on what made Company of Heroes 2 a great game by adding a couple of new, diverse factions to the game as well as brand new maps that are amazingly developed. For the price of the DLC, fans of the original game or genre will surely get their money worth.

Citadels

There might be an honest-to-goodness game somewhere in here, lurking underneath the slew of technical issues, uninspired gameplay, game-breaking mechanics and cryptic explanations for how everything fits together. Not that the game would have fit together in the first place, anyway. Whatever may be underneath the game, it's really not worth the trouble of finding out.

StarDrive

A very ambitious undertaking, StarDrive has a lot of promise. There's a lot the developer hopes to add, and he plans on supporting the game for the foreseeable future, but the package as it stands is a bit of a hard sell to all but the most patient and driven 4X fans. If you are willing to dig deep, there are some diamonds to be found in this rough. If not, you may want to wait for this package to fill itself out a bit more.

Stronghold 3

Damn wolves. They’re sneaky too. I think this is a strong story with several shortcomings in execution. This would be great if it was on a Steam sale, but I don’t know about full price.

Sid Meier's Civilization V

Civilization V is one of the best strategy games I have ever played. There are some issues but those are so minor in comparison to all the great things Firaxis has done to not only make this accessible to new players but even returning players as well. I can say with great confidence that you will not get a better game of strategy right now then what Civilization V has to offer, it is just that good.

Command & Conquer 3 Tiberium Wars

However for those who are not blessed with such machines the Xbox 360 version is still a capable RTS that just suffers from lackluster controls. Outside of the controls there is still a great RTS experience to be had, and one that can literally become an addiction if you let it.

Company of Heroes

Company of Heroes is the real deal. This is a game that doesn’t need to be compared to previous RTS games because it is just flat out a great game. Instead however this is a game that will be compared to when checking out upcoming RTS releases to see if it can be up to par with the brilliance of Company of Heroes.
