The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Review

Rebirth, change of direction, or coming of age -- The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the most mature game in the series' long history. It is a difficult game from a combat and survival perspective, and a challenging game in the amount of information that players have been trusted to figure out for themselves.

Don't Starve: Giant Edition

Don't Starve's art style, animation, even sense of bizarre, gallows humor are definitely the best things about the game. Unfortunately, that grimness doesn't really come together to add much in the end beyond the aesthetic.

Bayonetta 2

Bayonetta 2 is a relentlessly entertaining ride from start to finish, with pacing meticulously designed to wring every last drop of adrenaline out of you before reigning things in with a quiet, humorous aside. Alternate costumes, weapons, challenge rooms, co-op modes and more await you after you’ve seen through the lengthy campaign, and a copy of the original - excellent in its own right - is included gratis. Action fans would have to be insane to pass this one up.

Squids Odyssey

Squids Odyssey may have the cartoon style and simple story, but it is anything but shallow. Classes, upgrades, strategy and RPG elements all lead this game in a more hardcore direction despite the art and character design. The levels are easy to jump in and out of during short sittings, but long play sessions will lead to frustration and headaches. Squids Odyssey is very lengthy and may get repetitive, but for the times in between games or while watching TV it is the perfect fit.

Super Mario 3D World

Super Mario 3D World is both gorgeous and about as enjoyable as a video game can be. There is an immense amount of depth that kept me coming back for more, time and time again. This is the rare type of game that I believe ten years down the road we will be coming back and playing again and again. It’s that good. For all those worried that the Wii U was going to fall into some dark oblivion, fret not, your savior is here and its Super Mario 3D World one of the best platformers ever made.

Rayman Legends

Any control issues aside, Rayman Legends never ceases to be enjoyable. The game is so fully featured that it makes Rayman Origins seem like a prototype. From the game’s delightful tone to it’s gorgeous graphics and top notch level design, Legends is better than Origins quantitatively and qualitatively. Not only that, it’s one of the best games of 2013 and one of the best platformers of all time. Maybe even better than Rayman 2.

Star Wars Pinball

They're certainly not the worst tables Zen has ever put out, but they're also not the best, and $10 gets you a pretty varied collection of tables. At the same time, you can probably ignore this whole review if you're just a really big Star Wars fan, because this is the kind of fanservice you want, right? There are better tables to spend your money on, but the Empire and Clone Wars tables are fine enough to satisfy you if you do buy it.

New Super Luigi U

For a third of the price of the main game, you essentially double the length. You get a whole new slew of 80 levels that takes about as long as the main game to get through, and has even more to do because it's just so amazingly difficult. While some of the visual elements feel a little pasted-in, New Super Luigi U adds enough fresh things to an already excellent base game to be more than worth your time.

Game and Wario

At the end of the day, Game and Wario is a compilation of a few good and a lot of mediocre experiences. You can see a ton of potential in a great Wario game for the Wii U but Game and Wario is not that game.

Puddle

The decent core concept winds up being entirely buried under a mountain of frustrating, annoying levels and pointlessly difficult tasks that suck the fun out of the game. It really seems like it would have worked better as a middleware physics engine, because it certainly doesn’t work as a game.

Nintendo Land

As I go about my day, I have to stop and wonder why I’m not just staying in and playing Nintendo Land. The game is more fun than I ever thought it would be—it smartly adds to the games as you get better at them, providing you with a greater challenge as you progress through and giving you so much more to play and experience.

Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed

It's really a shame that such obvious and ostensibly easy-to-fix bugs are out there right now, because without them, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed is an excellent entry into a monopolized subgenre that does things differently enough to be well worth a look.
