Vaporum Review

Although its absolute heyday might have passed, steampunk continues to whir, rattle and grind its way through fantasy fiction and media. The steampunk aesthetic has been at the heart of more than a few video games as well, including the BioShock series and Dishonored and its sequel. Add to this list Vaporum, a first-person, grid-based dungeon crawler.

Frostpunk Review

I love building sims. Games like Cities: Skylines allow me to craft a Utopian intersection of efficient commerce and transportation, and games like Tropico let me indulge in the fantasy of becoming the ultimate despot. Then there's Frostpunk, which blends the bleakest possible alternative history with a scaled-back city builder, all in service of an exploration of humanity, morality and the choices made in the name of survival.

Tesla vs Lovecraft Review

Nikola Tesla (1856-1943) was a Serbian-American inventor, engineer and futurist, contributing to alternating current electricity supply system. H. P. Lovecraft (1890-1937) was an American author, known for his influential horror fiction. Both Tesla and Lovecraft were disgraced in their lifetime but later generations would recognize their achievements.

Empyre: Lords of the Sea Review

It's unfortunately easy to focus on what's lacking about Empyre, but the game's premise and setting are sufficiently original, and its combat is engaging enough to warrant a look. Perhaps given a larger team and a longer development process, some of the empty spaces could have been filled in.

80 Days

80 Days is a simple game about globe trotting. But in those travels are a number fantastic smaller narratives that make what could be a dull and straightforward journey incredibly engaging. More so than that is the game’s ability to make picking route both terrifying and rewarding. But most of all is the shear personality and replayability of 80 Days. I’ve circumnavigated the Earth fives times and every single trip has been different. Well written, fun, easy to pickup and difficult to put down, 80 Days is not only one of the best mobile games around, it's one of the best video games, mobile or not, to come out in 2014 so far.

The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing

And with that, I end my incredible adventure in the land of Borgovia. I am thrilled to say that it was not without merit, and despite some missteps, was well worth the 14 hours I spent monster hunting and looting my way through it's campy yet completely endearing game world. The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing was a treat, and hopefully, we'll be able to have more in the future.
