Bionic Commando Rearmed

Well over two decades ago Capcom brought you Bionic Commando on the NES which a lot of gamers probably never played.  Now over twenty years later Capcom decided to take Bionic Commando and make every aspect of the game up to date and more difficult.  Xbox Live Arcade has never really found a great action game and I myself have not been overly impressed with a lot of the titles.  Can Bionic Commando Rearmed give XBLA the great action game its been searching for?

To start it off you play as Nathan “Radd” Spencer who basically is a tough dude with a bionic arm.  Your mission is to save Super Joe and stop a communist leader all by yourself and the help of your team through voice chats.

The main reason Bionic Commando was talked about when it released twenty years ago was because of its high difficulty level.  Now Bionic Commando Rearmed is not your average XBLA title that you can just pick up and play and can at times be extremely difficult.  The games controls are easy to get used to and the bionic arm mechanism works well.  However when the swinging mechanics and puzzles needed to hack into enemy systems come into play the game becomes much more difficult.

With the bionic arm comes some really neat upgrades either with your main firearm or with the bionic arm itself.  Eventually you get an upgrade that allows you to toss enemies off to the side with your bionic arm which makes the game that much more fun.  The shooting is your typical old school shooter and reminds me a lot of Contra.  With the ever improved Bionic arm and some really awesome upgrades the game is easily the best old school action brought onto the XBLA.

The length of the game is basically the same as the NES version, but with a co-op play mode and some neat obstacle courses the game really has a lot of variety.  Once you have mastered the swing the game is a ton of fun to play and every part of it is well thought out.

The graphics in Bionic Commando Rearmed are probably the best I have seen on XBLA and really stand out when you first play the game.  The characters all look really great and each of the levels is very bright and full of great looking scenes.  With the arm and swinging the camera follows really well and with the co-op as well. Throughout the game all of the levels have nearly the same layout as the original but the graphic enhancements really make up for it and make the game that much more solid.

Fun Factor

Bionic Commando Rearmed as I said earlier is a pretty difficult game to get through in one sitting.  You will get stuck sometimes and have to find a way to make it through or just master the swing before moving onto the next level.  However the gameplay and great feeling when you blast the enemy with a rocket launcher or swing your way onto victory really makes this a really fun game.  The co-op brings even more excitement as you and a friend can pick up the game and have a blast.  Bionic Commando Rearmed is one of the most if not the most fun game on XBLA.

There is no doubt that Bionic Commando Rearmed is the best title out on XBLA to date.  It combines everything great from the original and steps it up a notch with new upgrades, amazing graphics, great co-op play and an overall great game.  For only ten bucks this one is definitely worth the purchase and will give you the challenge you were looking for.
